Italian 20 Lira gold coins feature the reigning monarch of Italy on their obverse side, produced at mints across Florence, Milan, Naples and Turin beginning production in 1861, just after Italy became unified. At first these coins featured King Victor Emmanuel II until his death in 1878 whereas between late 1878 and 1900 Umberto I oversaw colonial expansion across Africa as well as triple alliance agreements between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.
On the reverse of this coin is displayed the national coat of arms for Italy surrounded by olive and oak branches – this design also serves as its denominational representation.
Denomination
Once legal tender in Italy, these coins have since fallen into history but still hold great historical, intrinsic, and numismatic value – making them popular with collectors and precious metal investors alike.
These fractional gold coins feature the portrait of Victor Emanuel, who became King of Italy after its unification in 1861. On the reverse is Italy’s coat of arms with olive and oak branches enclosing its shield.
However, these coins do not meet the IRS requirement of 99.5% gold purity for inclusion into an IRA account, so they are generally not seen as prudent investments for this type of account. However, collectors still seek them out due to their unique appeal and they make an ideal addition to a collection of vintage gold coins from all over the world.
Value
The gold lira coin was issued to commemorate Italy’s unification, featuring its reigning king on its obverse. Until 2002 when its face value was replaced by that of the euro, this legal tender coin served as legal tender within Italy.
Even though they no longer carry face values in Italian Lire, these coins retain their intrinsic, collector’s, and historical value. Their premium stems from being an ancient gold bullion piece with significant historical value; its gold content alone is worth over $200 at current spot market prices.
As such, these Italian 20 Lire gold coins are appealing to many precious metal investors and collectors. Though not suitable for an IRA account due to lack of high purity standards required by IRS approved IRAs, they make an ideal addition for non-IRA retirement accounts as well as world coin collections.
